With over 50 years in show business, being in the company of Bobby Davro is a thrill. He has done this so many times before you just feel completely at ease throughout a whole show. Such a pro and what was really impressive was the fact that you never felt at any time that he was going through the motions. He was on stage to do his job – entertain! And he certainly did that. He had everyone under his spell as he brought us comedy, impressions and music and he interacted so well with the audience, who were in stitches throughout.
The venue at the impressive Bier Keller at the Frankenstein Pub in the Old Town is a perfect setting for him – great sound, brilliant atmosphere and an intimacy which puts everyone at ease. OK, I’ve heard some of his material before, but his new gags were so funny and he’s as sharp as a pin. It was a privilege to watch a true comedy legend at work and a bonus saw him bring on his close friend Danny Posthill, one of the country’s best impressionists. They acted out a kind of “duelling banjos” style impression situation with them both doing the same characters and it was a masterclass in entertainment with the two of them bringing the house down in that segment.
The 75 minutes raced by so quickly and I could easily have sat through another hour. There are some brilliant comics around at the moment for sure – a new generation who are getting the attention of everyone – but it’s good to remind ourselves of the likes of Bobby Davro, Mick Miller, Jim Davidson, Jasper Carrott and Roy Chubby Brown who are still making us laugh and showing us how to go on stage and command the audience. Bobby is right at the top of that list and long may he continue.
