My first Night Own Productions show of the Fringe and as I’ve mentioned previously, it’s always a delight to see how these guys go about their business, royally entertaining packed audiences with so many tribute shows. There are some old favourites from last year (like Fleetwood Mac, Queen, Elton John and Billy Joel) along with some new shows (Kate Bush and this one among others) to keep things fresh.
Dan Clewes and Angus Munro are two of the more prominent leads who effortlessly take the stage and immediately command the attention of the crowd who flock to these shows year after year. They are an established part of the Edinburgh Fringe and the format of 50 minute shows packed with hits, the odd deep cut and multi media clips sharing rare information about each subject is a winning one.
For anyone who hasn’t seen a Night Owl show they have a bunch of very talented musicians and singers who rotate the duties between them, making the shows extremely tight musically and in this world of making ends meet, it means they can put these shows out on budget. Night Owl isn’t about lookalike/soundalike shows – there are shows which exclusively go out to tour with that in mind – but instead they re-create the music, deliver in spades a great show for the audiences and no one really cares that (in this case) Angus doesn’t look like Phil Collins. It’s all about being faithful to the music the fans want to hear and it works really well.
Angus is a great singer and knows how to work a crowd – he also knows how to get this reviewer on his side by referencing me in the show!! I didn’t need converting though and thoroughly enjoyed the entertainment. Yes, if he came out looking and sound like Phil Collins he would have had the extra star because that would have taken things to the next level, but it’s an easy 4 stars!
