By now you’ll realise that I am a huge fan of magic and magicians. It’s been great to have many of them on the show and they are all really nice people. One of the most famous is Kevin Quantum, the former scientist-turned-magician who is a regular at the Fringe and a very welcome one, plying his trade at the Ballroom, which was packed when I attended his show this year.
He also has this knack of having a thread running through the show which leads to some kind of reveal at the end, and he does it so well. His interaction with the audience and his general playfulness with them puts everyone at ease and by the end of the show they are literally eating out of his hand.
Rapport with an audience is so important. Yes you can have some of the best tricks in the world, but if you can’t communicate to your audience in the manner that Kevin and many of his colleagues do, then it can be a tough night. Some of the biggest magicians in the world have let themselves down by stumbling through their tricks without the gift of the gab, and it really does make a difference to the overall enjoyment of the evening.
No such issues for the cheeky chappie that is Kevin Quantum, and you can see the crowd warming to him right from the start of the performance. Again this is a show that has a lovely ending which will send you home content and happy at the very least, with huge chunks of amazement thrown in for good measure. All musicians work so hard behind the scenes, and Kevin is one of them for sure. If you’re a fan of magic you simply cannot bypass this show.
